SpendScoop ("the App", "we", "our") is a personal expense-tracking app for Android and iOS. This Privacy Policy explains what information the App handles, how it is used, and the choices you have. We built SpendScoop around a simple principle: your financial data never leaves your device.
Summary
- SpendScoop stores all of your data locally on your device, in a private, sandboxed database. Nothing is uploaded to us or to any third party.
- We do not operate a server, do not use analytics or advertising SDKs, and do not have user accounts or logins.
- On Android, the App reads bank SMS on your device only, to automatically detect transactions. This processing happens entirely on-device.
- On iOS, the App has no access to SMS at all; transactions are entered manually.
- You can delete any or all of your data at any time, and uninstalling the App permanently erases everything, since nothing is backed up by us.
Information the App Accesses
SMS messages (Android only)
With your permission, SpendScoop reads SMS messages on your device to identify bank transaction alerts (debits, credits, refunds) from supported banks (e.g. HDFC Bank, SBI, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Bank, and other Indian banks whose sender IDs the App recognizes). The App scans your inbox (default: the last 30 days) on first permission grant or "Re-sync SMS Inbox," and listens for new messages in real time afterward. It uses on-device matching to keep genuine transaction alerts and discard anything else — OTPs, balance updates, or promotional messages — and stores only the fields needed for expense tracking: amount, type, merchant, bank, last-4 account digits, currency and timestamp. None of this ever leaves your device. This SMS data is used exclusively to power SpendScoop's core budget-tracking functionality and is never used for advertising, profiling, or any other purpose.
Manually entered transactions
On iOS, and optionally on Android, you can add "cash" transactions by hand. This is stored locally in the same on-device database as SMS-derived transactions.
App settings and preferences
Theme, notification toggle, onboarding status, and SMS scan range are stored locally on your device and never transmitted anywhere.
What we do not collect
We do not collect your name, phone number, precise location, contacts, photos, or non-bank SMS content. We do not use cookies, analytics SDKs, advertising identifiers, or crash-reporting services. We do not require or support account creation or login.
How Information Is Used
All processing happens on your device, inside the App, solely to detect and categorize your transactions, show spending summaries and charts, let you search/filter/edit/delete transactions, and optionally notify you when a new transaction is detected. We never use your data for advertising or profiling.
Data Storage and Security
- All data is stored in a private, app-sandboxed local database on your device — other apps cannot access it.
- We operate no backend server, so there is no copy of your data under our control anywhere else.
- Standard OS-level device backups (Google Account backup, iCloud) may include the App's local data like any other app's storage — that's controlled by your device and OS settings, not by us.
Data Sharing and Third Parties
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with third parties, and use no analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting services. If you use "Export as CSV" in Settings, the App hands a file to your device's native share sheet — you choose the destination, and we have no visibility into what happens after that.
Permissions Explained (Android)
SMS permissions are optional — denying or revoking them leaves SpendScoop fully usable in manual-entry mode. On iOS, the App never requests SMS access, since the platform doesn't allow it.
Data Retention and Deletion
- Your data stays on your device until you delete it yourself.
- Delete any transaction from its detail screen, or wipe everything via Settings → Clear All Data.
- Uninstalling the App permanently deletes all local data — since nothing is backed up by us, this cannot be recovered by us.
Children's Privacy
SpendScoop is intended for general audiences managing their own finances and is not directed at children. Since the App has no accounts or data transmission, we have no mechanism to identify a user's age.
Your Choices and Control
- View, edit the category of, or delete any transaction at any time.
- Turn off SMS auto-detection by denying or revoking the SMS permission.
- Turn off transaction notifications in Settings.
- Export your data as CSV whenever you want a copy.
- Erase everything via Settings → Clear All Data, or by uninstalling the App.
Changes to This Policy
Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above. Since the App has no way to reach you directly, please check this page periodically if you'd like to stay informed.
